Wellness Week 2014

Wellness Week is a week-long fundraiser that is organized by the students in the Department of Exercise Science at Concordia University. The event was started in the fall of 2010 by a group of students who wanted to help raise money while incorporating the theme of fitness and health while educating the university and community about our department and athletic therapy. After the success of the 2010 fundraiser, each year the new students of our student association identify their charity of choice and give the entirety of the funds to that charity.

Since 2010 our Wellness Week has raised over $20,000 for various charities including: the Canadian Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, the Tony Proudfoot Fund benefiting the ALS Society of Quebec, Movember Canada benefiting Prostate Cancer Canada, Shinerama benefiting Cystic Fibrosis Canada and the Lymphedema Association of Quebec (LAQ). This year’s event marks the 7th edition and we will be raising money for Operation Smile. Operation Smile is an organization that helps provide funds for children who need surgery for cleft lip or cleft palate.

Wellness Week is an entire week of fitness classes in a range of areas, to promote trying new areas of exercise, and an opportunity to schedule a relaxation massage. Wellness Week offers one-hour fitness classes such as spinning, yoga, boot camp and zumba. Our athletic therapy students are trained and apply all the relaxation massages for the week. Wellness Week has become a signature event that students look forward to in the winter semester. The students of Exercise Science also get a chance to volunteer by helping at the information desks, which allows them to meet other students and staff. There are 27 departments in our faculty and we are continually introducing people to athletic therapy and what we do as part of the event. During the months preceding the event, the committee members also approach different companies to donate raffle prizes, which are then raffled off. Moreover, on the last day of the event the committee along with the Exercise Science Student Association hosts a Wine & Cheese at the Concordia campus. The Wine & Cheese welcomes all students and staff of the Exercise Science department and always proves to be a great networking experience between the students and faculty of the department and across the university.

Over the years the event has definitely grown in size. The event now has it’s own website where participants can see the fitness schedule as well as book a massage. This year the committee members will also be adding a “donate now” section to the website to further increase chances of a donation. Along with the advances of the website, the event now has its own logo. These new developments have definitely shown that the event is here to stay!
