The Countdown to the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games, Toronto, July & August 2015

By: Jonathan Maister

With the clock ticking, health care professionals of all stripes are showing increased interest in what will likely be the largest athletic event in the metropolitan Toronto area, in fact the entire Golden Horseshoe.

“The 2014 Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games”

While Athletic Therapists are the quintessential sport medicine professionals, others (Physiotherapy, Chiropractic, Massage) have also evolved into their own sport medicine specialties. As part of the educational mandate of the Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association, a “Prep for Pan Am” weekend is already planned for April 12th and 13th of this year in Burlington, Ontario. The extensive educational resources from the Athletic Therapy community is recognized, as well as the professional synergy with parallel sport medicine disciplines. Hence there will be a significant Athletic Therapist presence at this event.

There are a number of courses slated for this weekend which absolutely speak to the educational needs of Athletic Therapists. Firstly, the keynote speaker is Anne Hartley who will be providing a full day hands-on workshop entitled: Post Concussion Treatment, and Spinal Rehabilitation.

For those Athletic Therapists itching to get their hands refined for Sport Massage, a one day course will be offered by Remo Bucci RMT SMT(C) and Kristy Wiltshire RMT SMT(C). Both are nationally recognized Sport Massage Therapists with extensive major games and teaching experience.

Day two, Mike Grafstein CAT(C) RMT SMT(C) and Jonathan Maister CAT(C) RMT SMT(C) are presenting a review of Sprains and Strains with case studies incorporating taping techniques. This course would serve well as a refresher for Athletic Therapists wishing to brush up on their fundamentals.

In addition to the exciting educational component, this will be an outstanding networking opportunity with like-minded health care sports medicine professionals. Interest in attending has been expressed from a number of like-minded professionals from within and beyond Ontario
