Meet your Board of Directors - Richard DeMont

Richard DeMont, PhD, CAT(C), ATC

Director – Quebec

Outside New Glasgow, NS; now reside in Montreal, QC

What year did you become a Certified Athletic Therapist?

….A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away

Educational experiences

I completed my undergraduate degree at St. Francis Xavier University (Physical Education), did my Athletic Therapy education at Sheridan College (as it was called then), and completed graduate work at Indiana State University and the University of Pittsburgh. The Board of Certification in the United States also certifies me as an Athletic Trainer (ATC).

Place of employment

I am a faculty member in the Department of Exercise Science, and Athletic Therapy Program Director at Concordia University in Montreal, QC. I am also the Co-Director of the Athletic Therapy Research Laboratory, where a variety of research is completed, and is the main research area for graduate students in the Athletic Therapy stream at Concordia. My research primarily lies within the area of muscle activation and its contribution to joint dynamics. While having collaborations with researchers outside of main areas of Athletic Therapy, I am always interested in improving the graduate degrees held by Certified Athletic Therapists.

Board experience and current mandates

I joined the CATA Board of Directors in August 2012 as the Quebec Director. I participated in the development of our new By-Law, and felt compelled to continue as Quebec Director to ensure a smooth transition. My mandates include liaison to the Regional Presidents' Council, Liability Insurance, and the Strategic Plan. I previously served as CATA President from May 2007 to May 2008.

Current and previous committee experience

I am currently a member of the Program Accreditation Committee, and serve as the Director of the CATA Research Foundation. I have interest in regulation for Athletic Therapists and worked for many years on this pursuit in Quebec, where government recognition was achieved in 2012. Of course, there is more to do…

Personal information

I currently reside in Montreal, QC. My favorite personal activities are movies, newspapers, and a variety of exercise activities depending on the weather. In the summer, I enjoy the warm waters of Nova Scotia’s north coast, where I take a swim everyday.
