Team Canada Wins the First International Quiz Bowl

On Friday January 4th 2013, four CATA Certification Candidates traveled to Buffalo to attend the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) Conference. On Saturday, these four CATA Certification Candidates participated in the first EATA International Quiz Bowl competition, and came away victorious.

The idea first came forward at the EATA conference in Boston (Jan 2012). The conference organizers wanted to have some international flavour to the conference in 2013, being in Buffalo and so close to our largest regional chapter. They would be inviting Canadian speakers to the conference, and wanted to get students involved too. To this end, the eastern Canadian AT programs were invited to send students to participate in the 1st International Quiz Bowl. For those who are not familiar with the EATA Quiz Bowl, it is an AT trivia competition structured in a “Jeopardy-style” format.

The set up allows for the US accredited programs to select one student to compete against the other EATA institutions. There were 30 schools in the Bowl this year. The Canadian team members Sarah Rose (Concordia University), Jessie Dalton (Sheridan College), Mike Robinson (Sheridan College), and Brandon Downing (York University) played against the District 1 (Bethany Forshaw, Bridgewater State University, and Travis McCann, Southern Connecticut State University) and 2 (Katie Barr, Duquesne University, and Patrick Fava, Stony Brook University) winners from the EATA Quiz Bowl. All the students worked very well together in their teams. The Canadians jumped out in the lead at first, and held on to the lead throughout the majority of the competition. The US team came back part way to take the lead for a short while increasing the excitement on both sides. With a 300 point spread positioning them for final jeopardy, the Canadians saw that the topic was “Wrist and Hand” and they decided to wager all but one point. True to form, and the spirit of the game the Americans also let it all ride. Team Canada answered the question correctly while their American counterparts did not manage to come up with the correct answer. Congratulations Sarah, Jessie, Mike, and Brandon, you have made us all very proud as winners of the 1st International Quiz Bowl.

The Americans do not leave empty handed though, as they will be traveling to Las Vegas in June to represent the EATA at the NATA Quiz Bowl. Best of luck to our gracious hosts at the NATA Quiz Bowl.
